Concept from Ch 8

After reading the section on interview, I was thinking back to my experience, when I was working as a supervisor, and I interviewed people. I remember how much their appearance mattered, also their attitudes, but for me it was about the cover letter and the resume. I liked a short cover letter that made me want to take a look at the resume, and just like out textbook suggests to have a resume only fit one page. I remember reading some resumes and completely changing my mind on hiring a person or not, because for me it was important to see their education and work experience. There are so many additional reasons why I would hire a person, and yes many times it is based on the way they act, their ability to communicate is most important, because they can learn new tasks, as long as they have great communication ability.

  1. It has always made me curious as to why some people don’t take the interview process more seriously. I have been to interviews and have showed up in a shirt and tie while others have dressed down to the point of wearing jeans and a hat. There are those who forget that this may be the first time a potential employer gets to meet you in person. The better that impression the better chance you will have at the position. One of the nuggets that I have picked up was that an individuals ability is dependent on “Attitude and Aptitude”.

  2. Its kinda funny to me when I think about interviewing and appearance. I also had to interview people at my old job and the ones that were dressed nice always stood out. Its interesting to me because we have this big culture of relaxation in our attire. However, this is viewed negatively in a job interview. I remember when I was up for a promotion the other person that also applied for the position didn't bother to dress nicely. She was wearing a Christmas sweater during her interview. We both had the same boss and were told that the interviews would be casual. I still felt that I had to dress nice to make an impression. I definitely stood out though because my boss made it a point to say how nicely I was dressed that day.

  3. I agree with both of you, I feel if I was going to an interview I would dress professionally, to show that side of me. Dressing properly represents your professionalism, but many like you guys already point out, simply don't care. I would never hire a person who shows up in a t-shirt and jeans, because that attire says "I don't care about how I look".
